These paintings and drawings belong to a set of work that I made very early in my painting life. They have been sitting in my studio as part of a time gone-bye. They represent the part of my artistic self that dissects and examines rather than my expressive self. In this work, I became fascinated by the idea of the brushstroke as a primal element of painting. Most of this work was made by me making small brushstrokes in ink on paper, that I projected using a slide projector, onto other papers and canvases. I would then trace around the ‘image’ of the brushstroke, sometimes making multiples of the same brushstroke. I was interested in the idea of mass-producing something that is inherently the opposite of mass production - the individual brushstroke.
